Very thin

I have been having a bit of fun in the shop lately. Here is a 18" x 10" Ash Calabash that is 2 mil thick. In order to cut the piece this thin I have to keep it wet throughout the process. It was sanded with Abernet sandpaper. Then I stick it in the basement for a day to dry. Here is the before and after.

  1. Got to love "wood". It's such an underestimated material. Marvelous bowl. Very cool.

  2. A stunning result, Mike. I've done the same thing recently with an English oak calabash...and guess what? Barely any distortion at all! Wood! A platter also 2mm thick did move nicely though. You can't win them all I suppose.
