I have been having a bit of fun in the shop lately. Here is a 18" x 10" Ash Calabash that is 2 mil thick. In order to cut the piece this thin I have to keep it wet throughout the process. It was sanded with Abernet sandpaper. Then I stick it in the basement for a day to dry. Here is the before and after.
Got to love "wood". It's such an underestimated material. Marvelous bowl. Very cool.
ReplyDeleteA stunning result, Mike. I've done the same thing recently with an English oak calabash...and guess what? Barely any distortion at all! Wood! A platter also 2mm thick did move nicely though. You can't win them all I suppose.
